Deep Life Reflections: Friday Five

Issue 1 - The Journey Begins

Hello, I’ve just launched my new weekly email newsletter, Deep Life Reflections: Friday Five. Welcome to the first edition!

Each Friday, I’ll share five things I’m enjoying and thinking about. I hope you find them useful as we continue to explore the journey towards a deeper life.

Here’s my first Friday Five.

1. What I’m Reading

Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long and Well You Live by Becca Levy, PhD.

A comprehensive understanding of ageism and its impact on society. Levy’s research shows how positive age beliefs can extend life by seven and a half years over someone with negative age beliefs. She highlights the cultural differences in the way ageing is perceived and experienced; in the West, the ideal of youth; in the East, older adults are respected and revered for their wisdom and experience. The book also offers practical strategies for challenging ageism and promoting positive ageing.

It’s a reflective book. My mum and dad turn 75 and 80 this year. They both have a positive belief towards ageing. My dad is learning Spanish and my mum is getting ready for her next trip overseas. Neither think of themselves as ‘old’.

2. What I’m Watching

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. A Film by Ken Burns

A rich and extensive documentary series that examines the people and events that shaped the creation and development of America’s National Parks. Having spent time at the incredible Yosemite National Park in 2019, I wanted to learn more about the vision and dedication of people like John Muir, a fellow Scot, Theodore Roosevelt, and Stephen Mather who worked to establish and protect these natural wonders for future generations. Beautiful visuals throughout with a great narration from actor Peter Coyote.

3. What I’m Contemplating

How quickly people reach for their smartphone when they’re waiting in line, watching a film, or waiting for their friend to return from the bathroom. It’s becoming almost instinctual; the phone an extension of the human body and mind. Reaching for your phone reinforces a Pavlovian reaction, an instant “hit”. But we need these moments of quiet time with our minds more than ever, allowing them to wander and reflect, observing the world around us instead of being sucked into a screen. Next time you’re in a similar situation, be intentional. Keep the phone out of sight and enjoy the silence, as Depeche Mode once sang.

5. A Question for you

Do you know the areas where you are strongest? You’ve likely been told to focus on your weaknesses, but by focusing on your strengths instead, you’ll get the highest rate of return. Identify your strengths and unleash them in 2023 to make you happier, less stressed, and more confident.
